Ginger Root - my spicy bulbous friend.

Its been around for centuries, used in cooking, in medicine and in rituals - whats the big deal yo?

I decided to write about Ginger root and why/how I use it. Because, well, my love for it might inspire you to incorporate GR more actively in your life. Maybe. Lets see.

First things first : Im a huge advocate for using FRESH raw produce.  In this post I am writing about fresh ginger, not ginger pills, powder or any other silly versions of this lovely vegetable. It is the only way you will get the most out of this root in terms of flavor AND nutritional benefit.

A few reasons to get into Ginger :
  • Its most common attribute is its ability to effectively aid your digestive system, increasing saliva and digestive fluids. Relieves indigestion, gas pains, diarrhea and stomach cramping. It cleanses the bowels and kidneys.
  • In cooking, it has been used from Japanese cuisine to salads, eaten raw, making ginger beer and even icecream.
  • It is a great known diaphoretic - meaning it causes one to sweat, helping you to detox.
  • Great for the skin - either from external application or ingestion.
  • It is used to treat nausea - from either motion or morning sickness.
  • It is anti-inflammatory - helps relieve pain and reduce inflammation associated with arthritis, rheumatism and muscle spasms.
  • Helps to effectively stimulate blood circulation.
  • It has long been thought to have aphrodisiac powers, taken either internally or externally. It is mentioned in the Karma Sutra.
Well, as you can see, I have many reasons to write and rave about Ginger Root in my blog.

How I use it :
  • In natural tea, with honey and lemon. It is a time honored partnership of 3 very powerful natural ingredients that always does the trick for me when I have a sore throat, cold or just need to purify my stomach.
  • I add fresh Ginger in nearly ALL the juices I make with my GS-3000, it adds a great zing to my morning blends.
  • I recently had a massage at Bliss spa and noticed the therapist used fresh ginger together with the massage oil she used... it was amazing. My skin was warmed almost on contact and I later noticed how fresh, clean & detoxed it had become after I showered. I now use fresh ginger to give myself a mini facial scrub once a week. I have concocted a mixture using fresh ginger, lemon ( for oily skin ) and ground oatmeal - I exfoliate with the mixture then leave on skin for 5-10 minutes. If your skin is on the dry side, try adding honey or a drop or two of Extra Virgin Olive oil to the mix.
  • I suck on ginger and honey lozenges that really help sooth my throat ( Especially when working together with the active manuka honey. )

I leave you with a little tip about buying fresh ginger. I used to buy it at my local supermarket, but have noticed buying GR from my nearest Asian market was a better choice, it is much fresher because it moves off the shelves faster.

I mean really....? :

I'm so juicy for my GS-3000.

Chances are, you're not eating enough fruits & vegetables. Its ok, you're not alone.

It is important, scratch that, IMPERATIVE to include fresh produce in your daily diet. Since its not always practical or esthetically cool to carry vegetables or fruit in your hand/man bag I decided that the best alternative was to juice my produce - AND have fun with it.

It is important that you try to eat fresh produce without juicing, I feel even this fantastic juicer cannot fully replace the goodness that comes when you allow you body to do the 'juicing' work for you. I always have fresh salads and munch on whole fruits - when I can.

For the longest time I wanted to own a good juicer. Of course, there are hundreds out there and they each claim to be the best. I dug deeper to find the truth. Thankyou Google.

Without further ado, I would like to present to you the Green Star 3000.

Why I chose the GS-3000 :
  • Incredibly well built, solid & durable machine ( This thing will probably out-live me  ).
  • It has the unique triturating Twin Gear feature which is an impeller press system. It possesses a powerful RPM ; generating virtually no heat to your juice and thoroughly crushes and presses fruits and vegetables instead of cutting and shredding, allowing you to get the most and best nutritional juice from your produce. Also ;
  • Juice life is increased. Up to 48 hours in the refrigerator by delaying oxidation.
  • It juices herbs ( including wheatgrass and sprouts ).
  • Its relatively quiet.
  • Easy to clean ( literally just rinse and dry ).
  • It comes with a whole host of accessories -
    • Breadstick maker.
    • Pasta making attachment.
    • Homogenizing attachment for making all-natural Sorbets, Nut butters and Baby food.
I can honestly say, making fresh fruit sorbet made me ( and my stomach ) VERY happy. Delicious.

I have yet to make a raw chocolate and cashew nut butter... itll no doubt be amazing.

I have made so many different juices and have had alot of creative fun with it - here are only a few ive tried :
    • Carrot, orange and ginger
    • Cucumber, mint and orange.
    • Kale, lemon and honey ( Kale is one of the most alkali vegetables out there - tastes rather bitter on its own, adding fruit and natural sweetness helps alot. )
You get the idea... the list can go on and on.

Now as much as I could praise this machine till the day ends I must also point out some limitations and downfalls :

    • It is frightfully expensive ( around $450 ). -I found the price tag to be a great motivator, to juice as much as I can to get the most out of this machine.
    • It looks like it was designed in the 80's.
    • Its large and heavy.
    • The plastic will stain after first use.
I feel ive played my part well, im not biased.

All in all, The pro's outweigh the cons in my book. I love it.

I have formed a habit of late, once every 2-3 weeks I will have a day or two of detox, nothing but natural juices and water. It makes me feel amazing.

My energy levels are through the roof. My caffeine intake has reached a new low because I literally dont feel I need to drink as much ( not easy for a coffee-loving Sicilian ) and I have also noticed my skin texture and clarity has improved - I got that detox glow!

And now it's solid!..... Solid as a (Himalayan) rock!

      IM BACK!

Dont hate me, I had a busySLASHfantastic Summer. NO REALLY.

I have a slew of new and not so new but altogether fantastic findings that I have tried and tested for you. Because I do love you.

      Without further ado....

If you were to walk into my apartment, you'd find 3 strategically placed Himalayan Rock Salt lamps.

Have you ever noticed how fresh the air feels after a thunderstorm? Or notice how you feel so much better breathing mountain air or standing next to a waterfall? This is due to the ratio of negative ratio IONS in these surroundings.

Like many of you, I also have a computer, heater, microwave and florescent lamps etc that emit an abundance of positive ions - and well, high amounts of these positive ions can make you feel tired, depressed or/and irritable.

Salt crystals naturally emit negative ions allowing air to achieve optimal ionic balance. Negative ion emissions are increased when the salt is heated, hence the invention of Himalayan Salt Lamps.

      Bullet point time.
      • HRS is used to treat and prevent a variety of illnesses.
        • Asthma
        • Allergies
        • Rheumatism
        • High blood pressure
        • Migranes
      • HRS is particularly beneficial as desk lamps and night lights.
      • Apart from the ionization, illuminated Salt produces a pleasant, relaxing glow. Many yoga and reiki practitioners use HRS lamps in their studios to promote tranquility, peace and general well-being.
They have a limited range so it is important to place one or more in each room you have to get full negative ionic benefit. I live in studio and sorta went crazy - I have 3. I just like them so much!

A little salt-related fun fact for you - The origin of HRS comes from Karakorum, however it has been proven that there is no salt mine to be found anywhere in that Himalayan region anymore. Most of the salt comes from Pakistan. Quite a few opportunists are still claiming their salt is from the Himalayas. Beware.

The image to left here is a photo I took of 1 of the 3 HR lamps I own ( this one being the largest ).

I found this to be a good source. Of course, Amazon.com.

Some of you will remember my post about my wireless light switch at home  - I incorporated HRS lamps in my set up - ionization has never been so easy. I turn on my main lights that also activate the rock lamps. I also have one right next to my bed that I also use for a reading light.

Hey, if you dont like the lamp you can just grind the salt and use it in cooking. Just a thought.

I found this image and had to use it... I mean... this kitty can SELL. Im NOT a fan of pyramid shaped rock lamps, but this is pretty special.

'What on earth are Chia Seeds?'

No, not Chia-pet. Lets get that cleared up right away.

'It is the most nutrient dense grain known to man.' ( Hows that for an intro! )

I came across Chia Seeds (Salvia Hispanica L.) months ago. After reading up, buying & ultimately consuming, I have made my conclusion that Chia Seeds are, infact, a SUPERFOOD.

I have been reading more and more about CS and am fascinated by how such a tiny seed can hold so much goodness. I couldn't help but to be skeptical since I had never heard of them before and well, anyone can label something a 'superfood' and get away with it, if they market it correctly.

I was wrong. Deeply wrong. Oh the shame.

I feel ever since CS were mentioned on Oprah a while back, presented by the ever - popular Dr. Oz, America has been rapidly interested in CS and their benefits. Sales have gone up, more and more stores are carrying CS thus awareness rises to the masses.

What's all the fuss about? :

Chia seeds are an excellent source of fiber, loaded with antioxidants, full of protein, and the richest natural source of omega-3.

Believe it or not, gram for gram, chia seeds have 8 times more omega-3 than salmon, 5 times more antioxidants than blueberries, 3 times more fiber than bran flakes, and 2 times more calcium than milk!

If you are a fan of flax seeds then maybe its time you switched over. CS contain more Omega-3's than any other plant source, including flax-seed. CS do not need to be grounded to be digested, won't go rancid like flax and have a shelf life of over 5 years.

How do you incorporate CS in your diet?

I sprinkle CS on my :
I add CS to practically anything, it has has a very mild nutty flavor that is virtually tasteless when added to foods.

Biggest - immediate - difference noticed?

Well apart from knowing my body is getting an enormous amount of goodness, I have noticed my food cravings have been reduced approximately 40-50% ! No kidding.

I have also seen a difference while I work out, I'm more energized and hydrated compared to just drinking water.

      Why?

If you mix a spoon of Chia seeds in a glass of water and leave it for 30 minutes or so, you will get a glass with almost solid gelatin. CS absorbs 9 to 12 times its own weight in water. You feel fuller longer and helps digestion.

The gel that is formed in the stomach creates a barrier between carbohydrates and the digestive enzymes that break them down, thus slowing the conversion of carbohydrates into sugar ( This obviously benefits people with diabetes ).

      Conclusion?

Go check CS out. Its great for your health, will help reduce your cravings noticeably with their high fiber content, allows your body to be hydrated for longer and are easy to use everyday.

I use Navitas Naturals 'Chia Power'.

      Even Obama approves.

The lazy & beautiful wireless revolution.

I'm a little gadget freak. Ok fine, a big gadget freak.

I love anything that is automated, wireless and convenient.

When I finally rented my own apartment and lived by myself I wanted to make it a sanctuary for 'nights of passion & days of endless comfort'. One out of 2 ain't bad....*insert awkward silence here*..... Anyway, I wanted to have many lights with different strengths, allowing me to create a soothing atmosphere. Problem is, I got pretty tired of having to go to each light and reaching down to turn them on individually. Not good for the back & takes too long ( excuses excuses... )

      My Problem is eternally solved.

One of the most useful and downright COOL products I have ever bought is the wireless remote controlled outlets.

Its approx $25 and is worth every penny.

Simply plug any kind of device/lamp into the outlet and you have instantly created a remote controlled appliance. Without sounding ridiculous & in my strictest British accent; it is the bomb.

You can buy a one button remote with one outlet, but I knew I was going to find other things I could turn on and off while in bed or otherwise. I sure did.

      - A good trick is, I used a 2 plug splitter in one of the outlet, allowing one button to control TWO devices. Yeah. Go me.

      Product info :
      • Plugs into any standard wall outlet & operates through doors and walls, up to a 60ft range.
      • Perfect for lamps & small appliances (Max 10-amp load).
      • Remote & manual operation with power status indicating LED lights.
      • For indoor use only, comes with a factory 1 Year warranty and INCLUDES BATTERY ( Boo Yah! )
I bought the wireless kit on Amazon.com.

This is my personal set up -
      • Button 1 - Controls my desk top fan.
      • Button 2 - Controls 2 lights.. a floor lamp & a Himalayan rock salt lamp.
      • Button 3 - Controls 2 lights ( on other side of apt ).. another floor lamp & a Himalayan rock salt lamp.
Friends and family have been impressed by this little product and some have managed to shamelessly return to their childhood ways by picking up the remote and constantly turning a device on & off & on & off & on & off.

      Oh simple pleasures...

      Beelieve Pollen!

Oh what a surprise, i'm writing about Bee pollen.......Its no secret, i'm obsessed with Bees & Honey.

I was first introduced to bee/flower pollen when I visited my cousin in my home town  Palermo in Sicily approximately 5 years ago. I was a curious young thing back then ( nothing has changed ) and managed to obtain some myself to try out. My obsession with all things hive-related started at a very young age. Go figure.

Let me break it down for you as simply & briefly as my enthusiasm will allow :

      What is Bee Pollen?

Firstly, know this - it is really hard to get any information on bee pollen that is not from someone trying to sell you the stuff. I have tried my best to be as unbiased as I can, but then realized, a) Im not selling bee pollen and b) since this is my blog, of course i'm going to be slightly biased. Im allowed to be. I base my posts on my personal experiences with these products and foods.

Bee pollen consists of plant pollens collected by worker bees, combined with plant nectar and bee saliva. It contains approximately 30% protein, 55% carbohydrate, 1% to 2% fat, and 3% minerals and trace vitamins. Vitamin C concentrations of 3.6% to 5.9% also have been found in some pollen samples. Supporting literature lists almost 100 vitamins, minerals, enzymes, amino acids, and other compounds identified in bee pollen. The nutrients found in Bee Pollen are extremely high quality and raw. The symbiotic relationship between the pollen and bee saliva is what does the trick.

Bee pollen is not found in the everyday diet. It is found in nutritional supplements and Chinese herbal medicine products.

What is Bee Pollen used for?
      • Increases energy levels/enhances athletic performance.
      • Allows you to obtain top quality vitamins from a raw natural source.
      • Helps with seasonal allergies. ( It works brilliantly for me - but there is the risk of an allergic reaction in some people - so be careful )
      • Gives you abundant antioxidant benefits.
      • Improves memory.
      • Strengthens the immune system.
My main reason for taking Bee pollen is that it takes the edge off my hay fever. For this reason I buy local bee pollen ( and honey ).

How do you take Bee Pollen?

Take 1 teaspoon of bee pollen a half an hour before breakfast, followed by plenty of purified drinking water. I have also sprinkled it on my cereal. Get creative. I usually use bee pollen in the allergy months - March to June/July.

Very little research has been done on bee pollen, there are many claims, some are false or/and exaggerated. Either way, I trust nature and good food more than a pill when it comes to getting vitamins.

      In bees I trust.

      Me and my LX-3

...and you know what else I like? PHOTOGRAPHY.

Its not surprising. I work as a professional photo retoucher in NYC. Photography is by far my main hobby.

About 6 months ago I faced a dilemma. I wanted a powerful yet portable camera that allowed me to get super creative with quality results whilst not being weighed down by a cumbersome camera body/lens.

      Enter Panasonic DMC-LX3K ( Lumix 3 ).

I purchased it when it debuted back in August '08. Im sure it is already somewhat out of date compared to new camera's out there. The photography industry has us all in a tight grip, keeping up is not only exhausting but expensive. I chose a camera that I think will last at least a couple of years before I will consider buying a newer one.

I searched high and low for the right travel companion and all round decent camera that gives me manual control as well as being a point-&-shoot. I also made a point to choose one that gave me a wide angle option & good quality lens construction and optics.

'The camera is aimed at DSLR users who are looking for a compact camera to complement their existing SLR gear. Consequently the LX3 comes with comprehensive manual controls and a fast F2.0-F2.8 24-60mm (35mm equivalent) Leica DC Vario-Summicron lens. Images are captured on a 1/1.63-inch CCD sensor sporting 10.1 million effective pixels.'

I proudly bray its humble greatness...

      Features :
      • 24mm wide 2.5x optical LEICA DC lens
      • F2.0-2.8 maximum aperture range
      • 10.1 MegaPixel
      • MEGA O.I.S.(Optical Image Stabilizer)
      • Venus Engine IV
      • Joystick-operated manual control
      • Large 3.0” 460k dot LCD monitor
      • Raw and JPEG recording modes
      • Up to ISO 3200 sensitivity
      • Up to 1280x720 (30 fps) pixel movie capture
      • Manual exposure and focus options
      • 1/2000th to 60 sec shutter speeds
      • Flash hot-shoe
      • Threaded lens barrel for adding optional conversion lenses or filters
      • USB 2.0 Hi Speed interface
      • Internal memory (50 MB)
      • Close focusing distance: 1cm
      • Fast continuous shooting (2.5fps for 8 frames )
      • Great battery life
The LX-3 harnesses full automatic and full manual controls. Perfect.

This camera has had great press and won numerous awards.

I have 3 cameras in total:
      • Canon Rebel XTi - For extensive semi-professional shoots. Top quality. Too big for travel.
      • Panasonic DMC-LX3 - Perfect for travel. Power & portability in one.
      • Casio Exilim-S10 - Very small ( world slimmest camera when it came out - January '08 ) Perfect for nights out with friends and dinners - can hardly feel or see it when in your pocket.
Here are some pictures I took with the LX-3 to show low light handling, wide angle lens capability & creative manual focusing. These are only the tip of the iceberg as to what this baby can achieve. Some of these have been color treated and retouched in Photoshop - to show the endless creativity that is waiting for you... ( click to view )

      I purchased it on amazon.com ( Surprise surprise )
I also purchased the stylish Leica case for it. ( It looks cool. No really. )

Creamy & thick Salmon, Bean & Yogurt mix

      Ok so picture this ;

Its Sunday evening. Im at home, ravenous. I decide I do not want to order take out, I smirk at the pile of menus on my counter top and look at my darling kitchen.

I open my fridge. 3 ingredients stare at me longingly. I adopt a sudden urge to create a meal.

Why I have these three foods in my fridge :

Salmon - High in protein, low in fat & rich in prized Omega-3 oils.

Its by far my favorite fish to eat. Delicious.

Worried about levels of methylmercury in Salmon? In my opinion its nothing most people should worry about, but if you're particularly concerned ( targets are women who may become pregnant, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and young children ) I suggest you take a look at this and make your own conclusion. Good news is, you can use any type of fish or meat instead of salmon.

Garbanzo Beans - Very good source of folic acid, fiber, and manganese. A good source of
protein, as well as minerals such as iron, copper, zinc, and magnesium.
      - Whats not to like?

      Greek Yogurt - Holla!

I believe I have made an extremely healthy pasta/risotto sauce, sandwich filler, salad addition or a chip dip if blended.

This mix is generously enough for 2 homosapiens.

      Here goes :
      • 1 Can of Garbanzo beans. Strained.
      • 1 6oz cup of Greek yogurt ( I used fat free )
      • 8oz of smoked salmon. Cut into thin strips.
      • 2 tbsp of cold-pressed flax seed oil ( You can also use Olive oil )
      • 2 Tbsp Black sesame seeds
      • 1/3 tsp Garlic powder.
      • Sea Salt & Pepper ( I use Cayenne - always ) to taste.
Now mix all together. If the mix is too thick for your liking, then add a couple table spoons of hot water.

      Thats it. Ta da.

I cooked 1/4 cup of organic brown rice and added the mix. It was enough for 2 people, but of course, I devoured the whole thing, shamelessly.

Needless to say - I slept very well that night. ZZZzzzz.

      Greek Yogurt Mania.

Im so done with non-dairy shenanigans!

I love cheese, I love REAL milk and I LOVE LOVE Yogurt.

Now, given that im mildly lactose intolerant my choices in the dairy arena are somewhat limited and annoying. Especially when milk and cream cheese are concerned.

Yet I refuse to dismiss dairy products altogether. Theres so much goodness found in GOOD dairy sources.

I have been taking probiotics for a good while now, they have most definitely helped and have reconfigured my whole stomach. Allowing me to digest dairy much better without feeling like im pumping myself with chemicals to fix an internal problem.

So now im ready to take on some dairy. Letting some of the goodness into my body.

Only one thing was on my mind - YOGURT.

Yes, nearly all natural yogurt is good for you and your stomach. Here is a little list of benefits :

      • Yogurt is easier to digest than milk. ( Less or no gas, bloating and running to the loo )
      • Yogurt contributes to colon health. ( In time I could totally depend on yogurt for the good bacteria in my stomach and not probiotic pills )
      • Yogurt can boost immunity.
      • Yogurt aids healing after intestinal infections.
      • Yogurt is a rich source of calcium. ( duh )
      • Yogurt is an excellent source of protein. ( YES YES YES )
So yeah, yogurt is pretty great. But not all yogurts are made the same.

When shopping for yogurt, look at the ingredients list and the nutritional panel. Always.

The best yogurt will contains only live and active cultures and milk. - Opt for Organic yogurt if you can. Avoid yogurt that says "heat treated after culturing" on the label. This means that the yogurt was pasteurized after the healthful organisms were added, which dilutes the health benefits of the yogurt.

My super star choice when it comes to yogurt is GREEK YOGURT.

      Why Greek yogurt?

      • Texture - It is rich and thick. Part of what makes Greek yogurt different than regular yogurt is that it is strained to remove the whey, giving it a thicker consistency.
      • Versatility - Greek yogurt can be used for both savory and sweet dishes.
      • More Protein - Has more protein than the average American yogurt, Greek yogurt is a protein bomb. ( Holla! )
      • Easier to Digest - Greek yogurt contains less carbs than regular yogurt and therefore less lactose. ( HOLLA! )
There you have it. Another superfood.

If you're lactose intolerant and want to try dairy again I suggest 2 things. Buy quality probiotics and after about 1-3 months start introducing dairy products.

I tend to head for whole or low-fat Greek yogurt. Remember, try to eat the rawest form of dairy - head for whole fat not half fat/no fat if you can - not only will you have less digestion issues, but the complex/delicate proteins and nutrients found in whole fat products ( which are SO SO good for you - even for weight management ) get lost during heavy pasteurization.

Stick to whole foods in your balanced diet!

      The Quinoa Beast Salad.

I cooked something! I made my friends taste it! They liked it! Blogging ensues.

      The benefits & attributes of the Quinoa Beast Salad ;
      1. Its extremely filling.
      2. Its a great all-round/anytime meal.
      3. Provides essential vitamins, amino acids and nutrients from raw natural sources.
      4. Its PACKED with quality protein. ( incase you missed that - its PACKED )
      5. Its ridiculously good for you.
The recipe is infinitely customizable, giving you a wide range of option as far as adding or subtracting ingredients to suit your tastes.

      The ingredients list.

1 can of Garbanzo Beans ( Chickpeas )
      Half cup of Organic Quinoa
1 cup of Organic Chicken Stock
Quarter pound of Sliced Crimini Mushrooms
Half cup or Raw Pumpkin seeds
3 or 4 Cloves of roasted garlic - thinly sliced
      2 tbsp Black Sesame seeds
      2/3 tsp Cayenne Pepper
2 tbsp olive oil ( cold pressed if possible )
      1/3 tsp Sea Salt
      1/3 tsp Garlic Powder

Its really rather simple to cook :

Cook the quinoa in the chicken stock for about 7-10 minutes.

Pan grill the sliced Mushrooms with a tsp of olive oil.

In a big bowl add all ingredients other than the mushrooms & quinoa. Mix.

When quinoa and Muchrooms are done - Mix with other ingredients.

Aaaand you're DONE. This mix usually lasts me about a week if I have a small cup of it as a snack or mini meal everyday.

Try adding other legumes like kidney beans... or substituting/adding broccoli with the mushrooms. Dont be afraid to add this to a soup!... or mashed potatoes! or.. or... OR make it into a great chip dip by grinding/blending it together!... im NOT going to be cheesy and say 'the possibilities are endless!!'

See? told you it was simple.

What Bar? Him Bar? They Bar? NO...YOU BAR!

About a year ago I was OBSESSED with protein bars. Whats not to like? after all they are convenient, tasty & come is a variety of delicious flavors. Portable protein!

Well, after pretty much trying most of the protein bars out there, I can assure you - Protein bars are not all that great. Look at the ingredients list.

There is a serious problem with product labelling. In a recent series of tests performed by ConsumerLabs, 60% of the 30 bars tested failed to meet their labelling claims.

Here's some of the disturbing statistics...

o 1 out of 12 protein bars met the labeling claims.

o 1 out of 8 meal replacement bars met the labeling claims.

o 4 out of 10 diet bars met the labeling claims.

o 2 products exceed their claimed amounts of fat.

o 50% of bars tested exceeded their claimed level of carbohydrates, some by a significant amount.

Not forgetting, the amount of sugar alcohols ( Hello, IBS & Gas! ), fillers, poor grade protein and god know what else they inject these bars with.

After many stomach aches, bloating and in some cases running to the bathroom, I decided, ENOUGH!

I had a dilemma. I wanted a convenient pre/post gym snack and the ability to carry a bar around with me that I could munch on whilst running around the city, not worrying about my blood sugar levels dropping or missing a meal etc.

I entertained the idea of making my own. Plenty of recipes on the web. Most of them are very good. But to be honest, No. Maybe sometime in the future I will have the time and patience to make batches of the perfect 'Milazzo Protein Bar' - but right now I dont have the luxury of time.

      Answer? YOU BAR

Its simple, ingenious and im hooked.

What is it? - A company that hand makes your very own energy/protein/breakfast/anytime bar ( and shakes ) fresh based on the ingredients you specify.

They give you an easy to click through list. Start with your base ( I always choose fat-free date ) then move onto which type of protein, sweetener and you can even add grains, nuts, fruits & supplements to make a unique bar just for you. It couldn't be simpler. You then give your bar a name and they print it for you on the wrapper.

Not convinced yet? Well, I have been ordering the same bar for a while now and have been having fun creating different bars based on the activity at hand. I have one bar that I 'made' for after the gym ( protein and carbohydrates ) and I have a lighter bar I eat for a pick-me-up when I feel like im crashing at work.

They even tell you how many calories, fat, sodium, carbohydrates are in your bar by giving you your very own accurate nutritional 'label'. This one is for my post workout bar *click me*

Yeah. Its awesome. You know what you're getting and its FRESH.

      Simply Garlic.

I have always loved the taste of garlic. I was brought up in an Italian household and always remember seeing fresh garlic used by my mother for various fresh delicious meals as a child.

Growing up I thought garlic was just another vegetable. WRONG. I have been awakened to garlic's power! I shall share my findings and personal opinions as to why I think we should all be eating more fresh garlic.

      Health benefits of Garlic :
      • Numerous studies have demonstrated potential benefits of regular garlic consumption on blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
      • Anti-Inflammatory
      • Antibacterial
      • Antiviral Activity
      • Garlic is protective against many cancers
      • Potent, even against certain drug-resistant strains of bacteria
      • Promotes optimal health
      • Promotes weight control
      • Protection against Asbestos

As you can see, It has an impressive profile. There are literally hundreds of reports, books and blogs ( Like MM! ) that have detailed explanations as to the benefits of this small humble, readily available & cheap vegetable.

Garlic also has a long reputation in folk medicine and mythology for its health giving properties. Some of these - such as its antibacterial properties - have been confirmed by modern science, others remain open to question. Can it really help with conditions such as high blood pressure and even toothache.

      Ive always been unsure how to select and store garlic, and now, thanks to a little researching and my mothers help wise words I have a few notes to share so you know how to select the freshest garlic confidently;

      • For maximum flavor and nutritional benefits, always purchase fresh garlic. Although garlic in flake, powder or paste form may be more convenient, you will derive less culinary and health benefits from these forms.
      • Purchase garlic that is plump and has unbroken skin. Gently squeeze the garlic bulb between your fingers to check that it feels firm and is not damp. Avoid garlic that is soft, shriveled and moldy or that has begun to sprout.
      • Store fresh garlic in either an uncovered or a loosely covered container in a cool, dark place away from exposure to heat and sunlight. It is not necessary to refrigerate garlic.
      • Depending upon its age and variety, whole garlic bulbs will keep fresh from two weeks to two months. Inspect the bulb frequently and remove any cloves that appear to be dried out or moldy. Once you break the head of garlic, it greatly reduces its shelf life to just a few days.

      Tips for Preparing Garlic:

The first step to using garlic (unless you are roasting the entire bulb) is to separate the individual cloves. An easy way to do this is to place the bulb on a cutting board or hard surface and gently, but firmly, apply pressure with the palm of your hand at an angle. This will cause the layers of skin that hold the bulb together to separate.

To separate the skin from the individual cloves, place a clove with the smooth side down on a cutting board and gently tap it with the flat side of a wide knife. You can then remove the skin either with your fingers or with a small knife. If there is a green sprout in the clove's center, gently remove it since it is difficult to digest.

Chopping or crushing stimulates the enzymatic process that converts the phytonutrient alliin into allicin, a compound to which many of garlic's health benefits are attributed. In order to allow for maximal allicin production, wait several minutes before eating or cooking the garlic.

      More on Allicin -

The latest scientific research tells us that slicing, chopping, mincing or pressing garlic before cooking will enhance the health-promoting properties of garlic. A sulfur-based compound called alliin and an enzyme called alliinase are separated in the garlic's cell structure when it is whole. Cutting garlic ruptures the cells and releases these elements allowing them to come in contact and form a powerful new compound called alliicin which not only adds to the number of garlic's health-promoting benefits but is also the culprit behind their pungent aroma and gives garlic its "bite".

The more finely the garlic is chopped, the more alliicin is produced. Pressing garlic or mincing them into a smooth paste will give you the strongest flavor and the greatest amount of alliicin. The stronger the smell and flavor of garlic, the more health-promoting nutrients they contain. So the next time you chop, mince or press your garlic, you may have a greater appreciation of its strong aroma knowing that the more pungent the smell the better it is for your health!

Because this process takes some time, I recommend letting garlic sit for about 5-10 minutes after cutting while you prepare other ingredients. This is to ensure the maximum synthesis of alliicin. Once the compounds are formed they are quite stable and will withstand low heat for a short period of time, approximately 15 minutes. Research on garlic reinforces the validity of this practice. When crushed garlic was heated its ability to inhibit cancer development in animals was blocked; yet, when the researchers allowed the crushed garlic to 'stand' for 10 minutes before heating, its anticancer activity was preserved.

      A Few Serving Suggestions:

Marinate pressed garlic in olive oil and use the flavored oil in dressings and marinades.

Purée fresh garlic, canned garbanzo beans, tahini, olive oil and lemon juice to make quick and easy hummus dip.

Healthy sauté steamed spinach, garlic, and fresh lemon juice.- I make this ALL THE TIME. Yummy.

Add garlic to sauces and soups.

Purée roasted garlic, cooked potatoes and olive oil together to make delicious garlic mashed potatoes. Season to taste.

I am addicted to roasted garlic. I add it everywhere I can. I suggest getting creative with it and im certain that you'll see the benefits. Plus it makes anything taste wonderful!

Ok sure, it can give you a smelly breath... just remember to have gum handy after you eat.

I will soon be posting a recipy that uses garlic.. including how i made my own salad dressing using Apple Cider Vinegar, Manuka honey and roasted Garlic - stay tuned!

      Go Get Garlic Guys!

Rabbit Air BioGS Ultra-Quiet Air Purifier

I HATE POLLEN ! Allergy season is coming - save yourselves the hassle of purchasing tons of drugs and snorting it all up to relieve seasonal allergies, take a few minutes and think about what you can do to improve your body's own defense mechanism against pollen and such like substances.

In my own little quest of trying to work with my body to reach an acceptable point of resistance until I simply must pop an anti-histamine in my mouth, I have taken the time to read and research about my allergies.

First things first - air quality. You cant control the air outside your home so much, but you do have a certain control over your home. This is why I decided to get a good quality, effective & energy efficient air purifier. My journey took me to one brand : Rabbit Air.

      Rabbit Air BioGS Ultra-Quiet Air Purifier ( I purchased model 582A - Covers 780 Sq. Ft )

      Key Features:
      • BioGS™ HEPA Filtration - Main filter made of the most advanced Bio-Engineered Fiber Material which traps and destroys allergens and contaminants. (No secondary pollution through the HEPA filter like the conventional HEPA Air Cleaner.)
      • Flu Prevention Capability - The Osaka Public Health Research Center in Japan found that the BioGS™ HEPA filter coated with anti-influenza virus agent effectively lowered the viral transmission of H3N2 influenza virus.
      • Traps airborne allergens and contaminants down to 0.3 microns in size, 99.97% of the time.
      • Nano-Silver Sterilization - Features a Nano-Silver pre-filter to help kill airborne bacteria, mold and viruses.
      • Energy Efficient - Inexpensive to operate. (Only consumes 67 Watt at high speed & 7 Watt at silent speed.)
      • Cutting Edge Motor Technology with Inverter Control - Unit can operate at 5 different speeds. Completely Silent at low speed.
      • Covers up to 780 square feet based on 2 air changes per hour.
      • Generates negative-ions.
      • Activated Carbon Deodorization - Charcoal based Honeycomb Activated Carbon filter eliminates many common household odors, Volatile Organic compounds and household chemical smells.
      • Zero Ozone Emissions
      • Superior Quality - Product engineered by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and includes a 5 year warranty.
      • Long Life HEPA Filter, Washable Pre-filter & Deodorization filter - HEPA filter lasts up to 3 years based on 12 hours daily operation. Pre-filter and Charcoal based Honeycomb Activated Carbon filter are washable.
      • Remote Control ! - ( LOVE this feature, even if I love in an Studio Apt and everything is within arms reach! )

This air purifier covers up to 780 square feet and removes a wide variety of allergens and contaminants, including dust, pollens, dander, odors, chemical vapors and more.

I literally breathe better. I turn it on 'sleep mode' at night, I wake up refreshed. When I have guests over I turn it on, allowing air to circulate and for smells to immediately disappear. ( Im not saying my friends are smelly.. but you know.. )

I have definitely seen an improvement with my allergies, dust & that 'freshness' in the air.

Definitely on the pricey side, this retailing at around $350, but some things are worth investing in. This baby will last a lifetime and will be with me forever. I bought this a year ago and never looked back since. They have newer models out now which you can check out.

Safe and easy to operate, the Rabbit Air emits zero ozone and measures 18.0 x 22.5 x 9.0 inches (WxHxD) and weighs 17 pounds.

      GO BREATHE!

Side note - If you suffer from seasonal allergies like me, then do yourself a HUGE favor and go buy raw LOCALLY harvested honey from a farmers market or otherwise near you. It will also help you. The pollen in the honey collected from local flowers the bees help the body 'get used to' the type of pollen in the air when ingested. ( See, I told you, im obsessed with honey )

      Apple Cider Vinegar

Where do I start? Theres so much information on this amazing, natural, wonderful - cheap - elixir on the internet already, but I thought id add my own 2 cents and share my thoughts on it too, As I have become - what a surprise - obsessed with ACV.

      What is Apple Cider Vinegar?

ACV is an effective natural bacteria-fighting agent that contains many vital minerals and trace elements such as potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, chlorine, sodium, sulfur, copper, iron, silicon and fluorine that are vital for a healthy body.

Natural Apple Cider Vinegar is made by crushing fresh, organically grown apples and allowing them to mature in wooden barrels. This boosts the natural fermentation qualities of the crushed apples, which differs from the refined and distilled vinegars found in supermarkets. When the vinegar is mature, it contains a dark, cloudy, web-like bacterial foam called mother, which becomes visible when the rich brownish liquid is held to the light. The mother can be used to add to other vinegar to hasten maturity for making more Apple Cider Vinegar. Natural vinegars that contain the mother have enzymes and minerals that other vinegars in grocery stores may not have due to over-processing, over-heating, and filtration.

Although other types of vinegar -- such as white vinegar, balsamic vinegar, red wine vinegar and rice wine vinegar -- are used mainly in cooking, apple cider vinegar is used primarily for health purposes.

Why Do People Use Apple Cider Vinegar
      ?
The list is endless, so many ailments this wonder fluid can help you with, but I will mention but a few...
      • Reduce sinus infections and sore throats
      • Balance high cholesterol
      • Cure skin conditions such as acne
      • Protect against food poisoning
      • Fights allergies
      • Prevent muscle fatigue after exercise
      • Strengthen the immune system
      • Increase stamina
      • Increase metabolism which promotes weight loss
      • Improve digestion and cure constipation
      • Alleviate symptoms of arthritis and gout
      • Prevents bladder stones and urinary tract infections
      • Promotes proper body PH Balance thus reducing chance of getting ill.
      • Helps remove body sludge toxins
It has no known side effects and is safe for use by almost anyone.

Many people who take apple cider vinegar regularly notice a significant decrease in the occurrence of infections and illnesses. This includes bladder infections, yeast infections, common colds, and coughs.

      Maven thinks...
The brand I use is Braggs, because it is unfiltered, unheated, unpasteurized and 5% acidity. It contains the amazing 'Mother' of Vinegar which occurs naturally as strand-like enzymes of connected protein molecules. You dont have to go with the same brand as me, just make sure your ACV is unpasteurized, unheated and raw/organic.

Suggested dosage : You can get really creative with ACV, the traditional dosage of ACV is 2-3 Tsp of ACV in 8 oz of water 3x a day. Add honey to taste ( MANUKA Honey would be IDEAL !! )
You can make a wonderful vinigarette with ACV, Fresh garlic and Honey.. maybe then adding some herbs/sea salt to taste... im telling you, this vinigarette, not only great tasting but its a BOMB nutritionally wise - stay tuned for my review on humble garlic and how im totally bringing garlic back!

I urge anyone to explore the miracle health benefits of ACV, its a natural detox, antibiotic and antiseptic that fights germs and bacteria! Seriously guys, this stuff rocks!

I wanted a healthy, fast, low fat, high fiber, medium protein snack that helps my digestive system. I found it. Im staying away from candy/protein/sugar loaded fiber bars ( like Clif bar ) that are packed with all kinds of crazy ingredients and for the most part - sugar alcohols, which tear my insides apart.. I will be reviewing the PERFECT protein bar very soon.. watch this space!

To be clear, this is not a protein bar. It is an easy, TASTY way to include more fiber in my diet which I so sorely needed. Infact many of us dont eat half as much fiber as we should.

It is better than a candy bar. Ingredients are FAR better for you than any candy bar - even those claiming to be good for you, like Clif bars. ( Ive compared )

I would never recommend anyone to eat an enormous amount of these or to rely on them in any way, we should be getting fiber from natural sources first, but it helps me be more regular and its a great 'emergency food' - often, when at work, I dont have time to prepare food, let alone step out...

Ive seen improvements in my digestion and appetite control ( fiber has made me feel fuller, longer )

I order mine at www.amazon.com - you can buy a box of 16 bars for around $25 ( approx $1.5 each ). I have also seen them in selected deli's and stores.

The great thing is, you dont need much cocktail making experience to use this thing, it has pre written dose-marked recipes on the actual glass that are easy to follow. The lid has a very secure fit but i always hold tight when shaking. I keep the glass part in the freezer. Strainer is incorporated in the lid. Cheers!

Black & Decker HS2776 Food Steamer

Most of my friends and family have already realized that I am embarking on a huge journey through better foods. Whole foods. Raw foods. So much so that a few of them propelled me to start this blog, documenting my healthy findings to share for those people who, like me, are ready to take control of their body, mind and soul through a better understanding of natural foods. How amazingly satisfying it can be to know what you're putting into your body.

My journey has recently taken me to the realization that everyone should own a steaming machine/device. In effort to move away from microwaves I find that I had forgotten how good food can taste when cooked naturally and effectively, but most importantly, keeping all the complex nutrients and vitamins intact.

      • Electronic double-decker 7-quart-capacity food steamer - huge!
      • Built-in flavor-scenter screen spices up fish, chicken, and vegetables - FANTASTIC
      • 75-minute timer with signal bell and automatic shut-off provides added safety - no frills, just your classic ticking timer.
      • 2 3-1/2-quart cooking bowls, plus 7-cup rice-cooker bowl included
      • Measures approximately 9 by 9 by 15 inches - PERFECT size for small kitchens.
"Easily steam all kinds of food, from veggies and rice to seafood and meats, with this electronic double-decker 7-quart-capacity food steamer. Thanks to its adjustable 75-minute timer and water-measuring guides, cooking food according to individual preferences is simple. The unit provides two 3-1/2-quart cooking bowls, plus a 7-cup rice-cooker bowl that fits in either chamber. In addition, its built-in flavor-scenter screen easily spices up fish, chicken, and vegetables. Other useful features include a timer signal bell, a drip tray, easy-grip handles, and a support ring to seal the two bowls together, as well as automatic shut-off for added safety."

      Maven thinks...
As I wrote before, Its about taking control and putting better foods in your body that will strengthen and satisfy. Naturally. Im so sick of seeing all these drugs and over the counter preperations that claim to cure and maintain a certain wellbeing - wake up people, all the body needs is good whole foods, rest & excercise. This steamer is just another way I have taken control of how and what I eat. It is such a simple concept. Steaming food. Its not complicated. I throw vegetables in, put the timer on and get on with other things at home. Yesterday I slapped a huge cut of fresh salmon onto a sheet of foil, threw on some lemon slices, salt and pepper, and topped it off with some vegetables, wrapped the foil over the whole thing making a closed 'pouch' and put it in the steamer for 20/25 mins.. hey presto, filling, healthy dinner. Yay!

Like millions of people I tend to have stomach issues, bloating, gas, lactose intolerance & IBS - I finally took a stand and started making changes in my diet and did some research on how to restore my stomach to better handle todays foods and lifestyle.

Probiotics are living microorganisms that can provide health benefits that go beyond general nutrition. Probiotics have been used for centuries to promote good "gut" health and are found naturally in foods such as yogurt, kefir and aged cheese. The benefits are mainly due to the effects of these "friendly" bacteria on different intestinal functions. Probiotic dietary supplements contain "good" bacteria or yeast that when added to the diet have shown a range of favorable health benefits.

The scope of potential benefits delves into a broad range of conditions including lactose intolerance, colon cancer prevention, regulating cholesterol, regulating blood pressure, boosting immune function, h pylori infections, Crohn's disease, eczema, allergies, dermatitis, IBS, colitis, peptic ulcers, constipation, diarrhea, candida, systemic yeast infections, MRSA and other infectious diseases.

This probiotic goes beyond the common lactobacillus acidophilus-12 strains of probiotics. It actually restores the normal flora due to the type, amount and the base its in. Most are grown in cheap media--and processed quickly to market; these are from organic vegetables fermented for 5 years, so are more absorbable. They quickly restored my normal digestion, got rid of bloating, IBS, and gastric reflux. I recommend these to persons suffering from anything to do with your stomach, general wellbeing and even skin issues. I take 2-3 a day, on empty tomach is best.

      Antibacterial Properties of Manuka Honey

Manuka Honey has an antibacterial activity, due primarily to hydrogen peroxide formed in a "slow-release" manner by the enzyme glucose oxidase present. Some honeys are no more antibacterial than sugar, while others can be diluted more than 100-fold and still halt the growth of bacteria. The difference in potency of antibacterial activity found among the different honeys is more than 100-fold. Manuka Honey is the only honey available that is tested for its antibacterial activity. It contains an additional antibacterial component found only in honey produced from Leptospermum plants: what has been called the "Unique Manuka Factor" (UMF). There is evidence that the two antibacterial components may have a synergistic action.

I use manuka honey in my tea/coffee, and yields the same benefits ( the honey is unaffected by weather, heat or cold, although its recommended to be taken at room temperature ). Its great to use this honey the same way as regular honey, difference is, this stuff is a bit of a miracle in a jar. On cereal, toast, desserts.. you name it. This honey, like wine, gets better with age. I urge you to think again about one of nature's most available natural products to be used in your daily life. The reason some big corporation hasnt jumped on this and made a killing is because anone can be a beekeeper, so in their eyes, it is not a profitable product.
