About a year ago I was OBSESSED with protein bars. Whats not to like? after all they are convenient, tasty & come is a variety of delicious flavors. Portable protein!
Well, after pretty much trying most of the protein bars out there, I can assure you - Protein bars are not all that great. Look at the ingredients list.
There is a serious problem with product labelling. In a recent series of tests performed by ConsumerLabs, 60% of the 30 bars tested failed to meet their labelling claims.
Here's some of the disturbing statistics...
o 1 out of 12 protein bars met the labeling claims.
o 1 out of 8 meal replacement bars met the labeling claims.
o 4 out of 10 diet bars met the labeling claims.
o 2 products exceed their claimed amounts of fat.
o 50% of bars tested exceeded their claimed level of carbohydrates, some by a significant amount.
Not forgetting, the amount of sugar alcohols ( Hello, IBS & Gas! ), fillers, poor grade protein and god know what else they inject these bars with.
After many stomach aches, bloating and in some cases running to the bathroom, I decided, ENOUGH!
I had a dilemma. I wanted a convenient pre/post gym snack and the ability to carry a bar around with me that I could munch on whilst running around the city, not worrying about my blood sugar levels dropping or missing a meal etc.
I entertained the idea of making my own. Plenty of recipes on the web. Most of them are very good. But to be honest, No. Maybe sometime in the future I will have the time and patience to make batches of the perfect 'Milazzo Protein Bar' - but right now I dont have the luxury of time.
Answer? YOU BAR
Its simple, ingenious and im hooked.
What is it? - A company that hand makes your very own energy/protein/breakfast/anytime bar ( and shakes ) fresh based on the ingredients you specify.
They give you an easy to click through list. Start with your base ( I always choose fat-free date ) then move onto which type of protein, sweetener and you can even add grains, nuts, fruits & supplements to make a unique bar just for you. It couldn't be simpler. You then give your bar a name and they print it for you on the wrapper.
Not convinced yet? Well, I have been ordering the same bar for a while now and have been having fun creating different bars based on the activity at hand. I have one bar that I 'made' for after the gym ( protein and carbohydrates ) and I have a lighter bar I eat for a pick-me-up when I feel like im crashing at work.
They even tell you how many calories, fat, sodium, carbohydrates are in your bar by giving you your very own accurate nutritional 'label'. This one is for my post workout bar *click me*
Yeah. Its awesome. You know what you're getting and its FRESH.
